REGULATION CHANGES
- Starting Fall 2025, community members will no longer be allowed to participate in Club Sports reserved practice times on reserved courts.
- Community members cannot use UABC reserved courts during club hours.
- Community Member = anyone who is not a UA-affiliated student, faculty, or staff member
- Tournaments are still open to everyone, but AOC and COC forms must be submitted
- There are currently no clear enforcement mechanisms (as the situation evolves Club Sports will notify us of compliance procedures), but we do know that if a community member breaks the rules, the club – not the individual – will face consequences (Ex. If a community member lies about their status or enters a reserved space, UABC will be sanctioned).
- Community members cannot use UABC reserved courts during club hours.
- UA Faculty/Staff will still be allowed to participate as members of the club (as they represent the university).
Please remember: these decisions were not made by UABC, and we are doing everything we can to adapt while maintaining a sense of community and openness.
WHAT WILL BE CHANGING FOR UABC MEMBERS
To comply with these new policies and adjust to changes, UABC will be making the following changes starting Fall 2025:
- Membership fees will be abolished
- This results in a significant loss of funding. As a result, we may not be able to host as many events, and tournament fees may increase.
- Travel fee coverage may also be limited for those who wish to participate in away tournaments and are eligible for UABC sponsorship.
- Fundraising will become essential
- The club will be organizing fundraising events throughout the year. We ask all members to keep an eye out for announcements and hope you’ll be eager to support these efforts. Together, we can help maintain a space where badminton can thrive.
- All community members must complete AOR and COC forms (available at uabadminton.com) in order to participate in events and tournaments.
- These forms are valid for one year from the date of submission.
- Officers will be checking for form completion every event/tournament.
- Community Members: Anyone who is not a UA-affiliated student, faculty, or staff member.
FRIDAY PRACTICE CHANGES
- On Fridays from 6:00-7:00PM, UABC reserves six badminton courts (two full basketball courts) to ensure nets can be properly set up. During this time, community members may not play on these reserved courts. At 7:00PM, three of the reserved badminton courts (one full basketball court)become open gym (see below for open gym rules).
- The remaining three reserved badminton courts (one full basketball court) stay reserved for UABC use until 10:00 PM.
- Reserved and open gym courts will be clearly labeled on the red badminton poles with signage.
SUNDAY PRACTICE CHANGES
- On Sundays during UABC practice, 3 out of the 9 badminton courts are reserved for club use. The remaining 6 courts remain open gym for the entire duration of practice, operating on open gym rules.
- “Open Gym” Rules: Any court becomes open gym once players step off. Open gym courts operate on a first come, first serve basis for all parties (both community members and active club members).
BADMINTON COURT WAITING SYSTEM POLICY DURING TIMES OF HIGH DEMAND
To ensure equitable access and participation for all badminton attendees, during times of high demand and player turnout surpasses court availability the following mandatory court rotation system must be followed for all badminton courts:
- Definition of Open Gym: The University Recreation Center defines “Open Gym” as a period when facility space is available for various sports. While a sport (like badminton) may occupy the courts during this time, the rules of fair usage must still be enforced within the sport itself.
- The Recreation Center’s Policy states: “When courts are in demand, members should utilize a waiting system that allows other teams and individuals to participate.”
- Campus Recreation Policies Page: https://rec.arizona.edu/facilities/facility-policies
FAIR USAGE WITHIN THE BADMINTON SPORT
- Mandatory Court Exit After Play: Upon the completion of one game, all players on the court must immediately and fully exit the court area. This action is required to clearly indicate that the court is open and available for others to use, regardless of whether other players are currently waiting.
- Participation Queue: When courts are in high demand (i.e., when other individuals or teams are present and waiting to play), the vacated court is made available to the next individual or team utilizing the established waiting system.
- Re-Entry Under Low Demand: If, upon exiting the court, there are empty courts available elsewhere and no other individuals or teams are waiting, the players who just finished may play another game.
- Please support the implementation of a fair and equitable waiting system to ensure the culture of badminton at the University of Arizona remains ethical, considerate, and sportsmanlike.
These regulations directly support and are upheld by the University Recreation Center’s fair usage policy. Compliance with this regulation will be upheld by University Recreation staff, with assistance from UABC officers.
